Restaurant Review: LouVino (Middletown, KY)

Last night we ate at LouVino, a wine and small plates restaurant. We really don’t care for wine but the food was extremely delicious. They have a a simple yet complex southern inspired menu. We ordered a few dishes at a time until we got full. The waitstaff will bring you the dishes as the kitchen prepares them. They’re perfect size for 2 people to share. It was great to get to try a handful of options and not be committed to only an app, salad, entree.

We first ordered the Fried Chicken Tacos and the Duck Fat Frittes.

The tacos came first. Crispy chicken, garlic whipped potato, cheddar, pepper gravy. It was good but the gravy smelled exactly like KFC’s but tasted a lot better. The chicken was hand breaded and nicely fried. Mashed potatoes were very good. It was probably the weakest dish of the night but still tasty.

Then came the Duck Fat Frittes. Oh my, they were so delicious. I’ve been wanting to have this dish forever, I have just never been to a restaurant that serves them. You cannot go wrong with potatoes fries in duck fat. It was served with a white truffle aioli. I was very skeptical about it. I hate truffles but this aioli was perfectly balanced complimented the rich French fries. Only thing is the mason jar they served them in trapped the steam and made them a touch soggy.

Next was the seared scallops. Three absolutely perfectly cooked large scallops top of thinly sliced fried green tomatoes with a sweet maple mustard sauce and some Parmesan for a little salty umami flavor. All of these different flavors blended so well with the scallops. Scallops taste great on their but the accompaniments really enhanced the dish. The texture change from the soft scallops to a crunchy fried green tomato was a welcome addition.

Lastly, was their take on shrimp and grits with Benton’s Country ham, spiced maple syrup, and a sunny side up egg. Because an egg yolk makes almost everything better, fight me if you think otherwise. This dish had a lot going on and in a very good way, much like the scallops but way more flavors. This dish checked all of the flavor boxes. The shrimp was perfectly seasoned and fried. It was definitely the biggest portion. The large fried egg hid numerous shrimp and a pile of savory bacon. Great return on value.

Overall we had a wonderful experience. The small plates kept us entertained with a sense of suspense. The kitchen staff and wait staff know what they are doing. All the food was seasoned and cooked well and all plates came out hot and on time. The we spent only a little over an hour there and got four very strong dishes. I felt we got a great value with great portions and a variety of food. We will definitely be back because there’s a lot we on the menu we didn’t get to try.
